Governor Seyi Makinde has urged the citizens of Oyo State to embrace their responsibilities, foster unity, and commit to service as the state commences its 50th-anniversary celebrations. He characterized the Golden Jubilee as a pivotal moment for securing a more robust future for succeeding generations.
Delivering his address at the official launch of the Oyo State @ 50 event, held at the International Conference Centre in Ibadan, Makinde encouraged everyone to view the anniversary not just as a historical commemoration but as a collective pledge toward renewal, advancement, and the establishment of a lasting legacy.
Representing the people of the state, Makinde detailed the strategic commitments that will guide Oyo State's trajectory over the ensuing five decades. He pledged to cultivate a more resilient and competitive economy designed to generate employment opportunities, attract investment, and broaden the prospects available to the state's inhabitants.
He reiterated his administration's dedication to continuous infrastructure development, the provision of high-quality education tailored to equip children for future challenges, and the reinforcement of institutions built for longevity beyond the tenure of any single government.
According to the governor, maintaining peace, ensuring security, upholding sound governance, and exercising fiscal prudence are fundamental to preserving Oyo State's safety, stability, and attractiveness for business.
"Our foremost commitment is to ensure that the coming 50 years bring greater prosperity, equity, dignity, and optimism to every resident of Oyo State," the governor stated.
Makinde described the Golden Jubilee as an occasion for introspection, acceptance of responsibility, and recommitment, reflecting on how his personal journey and core values have been shaped by Oyo State throughout his life, both as a citizen and as a public servant.
He recalled the benefits of the free education policy initiated by the late Chief Bola Ige, which allowed him to attend Bishop Phillips Academy in 1980 without incurring school fees. He noted that the provision of free textbooks and learning resources solidified his conviction in the principles of equal opportunity and effective governance.
The governor also referenced the heartfelt tributes shared by residents on a dedicated digital platform for the anniversary, viewing them as testaments to the resilience, entrepreneurial spirit, and sense of belonging that characterize Oyo State.
Among the shared narratives was that of Toluwaloju Foluso, a former National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member who utilized his allowance to acquire fashion design skills during his service year and has since established a business that now employs eight young individuals. Another tribute, from Ogunronbi Oluwaseun, conveyed the quiet pride of individuals who were born, raised, and educated within the state.
"These accounts are more than just expressions of appreciation; they serve as concrete examples of opportunities, enterprise, hope, and a sense of belonging," Makinde remarked.
He highlighted that Oyo State has transitioned from making promises to achieving tangible results in recent years, demonstrating measurable advancements in economic growth, infrastructure, education, healthcare services, fiscal discipline, and public confidence.
Makinde extended his commendation to the state's security agencies for their dedication in maintaining peace, assuring them of ongoing governmental support. He also encouraged residents to actively engage in the week-long celebration, which is set to conclude with a grand finale on Tuesday, February 3.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Oyo @ 50 Planning Committee, Hon. Saheed Akinade- Fijabi, emphasized the historical importance of the state and characterized the celebration as a declaration of intent for future progress.
The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja, advocated for renewed acknowledgment of past leaders and overlooked contributors whose efforts formed the bedrock of the state's development. He urged residents to honor their legacy by persevering in their work towards a brighter future.
Established on February 3, 1976, following the division of the former Western State, Oyo State has its administrative center in Ibadan. The commemorative event was attended by family members of former governors, traditional and religious leaders, high-ranking government officials, and prominent political figures.
