The Cross River Police Command has taken into custody Ibiong Uyime Bassey, spouse of a pastor, for reportedly assaulting her five-year-old niece with a spatula. This incident occurred in Calabar.
Public awareness of the matter escalated after a video circulated online, showcasing the minor with noticeable swelling on her eye.
Reports indicate that the assault was triggered by the young girl allegedly taking meat from a cooking pot.
According to ASP Eitokpah Sunday, the police spokesperson, the arrest took place on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.
"We successfully apprehended one Ibiong Uyime Bassey (female) in relation to a viral video depicting the mistreatment of a child," the police public relations officer stated.
"The suspect, who lives on Atimbo Road, was taken into custody on March 11, 2026, around 10:45 AM by officers of the A Division Calabar following swift action prompted by the video's online emergence," the PPRO added.
"Initial investigations suggest that the accused maliciously attacked her niece, Edidiong Uwem Aniefiok, with a spatula, resulting in injuries near the child’s right eye.
"Additional checks have also revealed bruises elsewhere on the child’s body, indicating a pattern of abuse. The inquiry is ongoing, and more details will be shared shortly."
