The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State conducted a vital stakeholders’ meeting on January 26 in Uyo, as party leaders reiterated their dedication to revitalizing and rebuilding the party.
Iquat Umoren, the Caretaker Chairman of the PDP in Akwa Ibom, expressed gratitude to stakeholders for their steadfastness despite recent challenges. He highlighted that this meeting was part of the strategic plan aimed at initiating the party’s revival process.
"We are gathered to discuss our strategy for the upcoming year. It's essential for us to engage with our communities. Our political value is evident, which is why there are attempts to undermine us," said Mr. Umoren, a legal practitioner, assuring the attendees that the PDP would recover under his leadership.
He continued, "Don’t be misled. The PDP remains robust in Akwa Ibom. The opposition's claims of strength reveal their fear, as they continue to target us – the remaining dedicated members of the PDP. Together, we will rebuild our party and reclaim our mandate come 2027."
Ini Ememobong, the PDP's National Publicity Secretary, traveled from Abuja to partake in the meeting. He acknowledged that while the PDP is currently undergoing challenges, it is crucial for members to remain resilient amid changes in party affiliations.
"I urge you to prepare yourselves because temptations will arise. Assurance will come at a price, and the question is, what value do you place on your loyalty?" Ememobong stated.
Regarding the ongoing legal disputes involving the PDP, he expressed confidence that the previously established judicial precedents will favor the party’s position.
"We are confident that we have reached the lowest point; the only way now is up. I assure you, the PDP is poised for a strong comeback in Nigeria, and whether that extends to Akwa Ibom depends on us," he added.
Onofiok Luke, a former federal lawmaker, commended party members for their unwavering loyalty.
"I appreciate everyone for sticking with the party. I believe those who have departed did so for their reasons. They deserve their rights just as we should be allowed to maintain our association and loyalties," Mr. Luke remarked.
He emphasized his commitment to the party, reflecting on his political journey facilitated by the PDP, and encouraged all present to embrace the party's mission during these turbulent times.
"This party has been my foundation, and when it faces hardships, ethical conduct forbids me from leaving. Instead, I choose to remain and contribute to its growth, believing that adversity can lead to resurgence, as noted in scripture," Luke explained.
The meeting culminated in the establishment of the Akwa Ibom PDP Elders’ Forum, appointing Uwem Ita Etuk as chairman, Tony Esu as deputy chairman, with Chris Abasieyo and Adasi Obolum as members. Participants emphasized the need for robust grassroots mobilization, asserting that the PDP retains its popularity even in rural communities within the state.
As the meeting concluded, stakeholders were encouraged to engage their communities actively, reiterating the importance of unity within the party amidst ongoing political dynamics.
