Peter Obi, who previously ran for president under the Labour Party (LP), has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential elections as the main candidate, indicating he has no interest in a supporting role.
Obi conveyed this during a campaign event for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, specifically in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).
The former governor of Anambra State recently switched allegiance from the Labour Party to the ADC, a platform he is now leveraging for consultations ahead of the 2027 presidential race.
Supporters of Obi, including those part of the Obidient Movement, have been actively advocating for the ADC leadership to nominate him as their presidential flagbearer, with many expressing a strong preference for an "Obi or nothing" stance.
However, the ADC's National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, has cautioned party supporters against using divisive language, emphasizing the importance of maintaining party unity.
Speculation has also arisen regarding potential political alliances, with suggestions that some leaders are exploring the possibility of a Peter Obi- Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso presidential ticket under the ADC. An alternative plan reportedly involves adopting another party if this ticket does not materialize.
Political analysts have interpreted Kwankwaso's decision not to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a possible indicator of an emerging collaboration with Obi.
Concurrently, supporters of Atiku Abubakar have revived calls for Obi and his movement to consider a vice-presidential role, echoing the arrangement from the 2019 elections.
Nevertheless, in a widely circulated video, Obi appeared to dismiss such propositions, assuring his supporters that he would be running as the top candidate in the upcoming election.
He urged them to lend their support to his preferred candidate in the AMAC poll, stressing the significance of their backing for his political ambitions. "You see this coming election, support us in AMAC; it will help me. Your support in AMAC is critical to our journey. I am involved and contesting the coming election as number one. When I come back, you will see. I assure you," Obi stated.
