Police Begin Manhunt Following Attack on Rivers Monarch

The Rivers State Police Command has initiated a manhunt after gunmen attacked the convoy of King T.Y. Baridam, the paramount ruler of Bangha Kingdom. The incident occurred as the monarch was returning from a meeting, resulting in injuries.

The Rivers State Police Command has commenced an inquiry into a recent assault on the convoy of His Royal Majesty, King T.Y. Baridam, who is the paramount ruler of Bangha Kingdom.

Reports indicate that the assailants emerged from the bush on Sunday, launching an attack on the monarch's vehicle along the East-West Road while he was en route back from a gathering in the Okwale community, resulting in injuries to the royal.

CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, confirmed on Monday that the monarch is presently receiving medical care following the attack.

Iringe-Koko stated: “The Rivers State Police Command has taken action to investigate an incident involving a traditional leader in the Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State.

“On Sunday, January 25, 2026, at approximately 5:30 PM, His Royal Majesty, King T.Y. Baridam, the Paramount Ruler of Bangha Kingdom reported at the police station that, while returning from a meeting in Okwale, his vehicle was attacked by armed individuals.”

She continued: “Upon approaching the Tekar Sogho Road leading to the East-West Road in Khana LGA, the perpetrators emerged from the bush and fired upon his vehicle, a black Prado Jeep. The gunfire resulted in a shattered windscreen and extensive damage to various parts of the vehicle.

“During this attack, the monarch suffered a gunshot wound to his thigh and is currently undergoing medical treatment.

“Following the incident, police units were rapidly dispatched to the vicinity to search for the assailants. An investigation is currently underway to identify and arrest those involved.”
