The Police Command in Cross River State has revealed the existence of an unlawful mortuary in the Isong Inyang Community located in Akamkpa Local Government Area, where eight decomposed remains were retrieved.
In a statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday, it was confirmed that a suspect has been apprehended in relation to the incident. Preliminary inquiries suggest that this suspect is affiliated with a local business operating in the vicinity.
The findings came about following reliable intelligence obtained on February 13, 2026, concerning the presence of deceased persons in a local embalming facility situated along the Calabar–Ikom Highway in Isong Inyang Community.
"At approximately 11:56 hours on the date mentioned, credible information regarding the presence of corpses at the establishment was received. Officers were promptly dispatched to the location to confirm the report. Upon their arrival, they discovered eight well-preserved corpses at the site," the statement elaborated.
The suspect, identified as Sunday Ben Reuben, hails from Nsit Ibom in Akwa Ibom State. He is reportedly employed as a mortician at Enghaut Company Mortuary within the Akamkpa Local Government Area.
Currently, he remains in police custody as investigations continue to clarify the circumstances leading to this discovery and ascertain if any legal violations occurred.
The police command has urged the public to stay calm and refrain from speculation, ensuring that further verified details will be communicated in due course.
