The Yobe State Police Command has initiated an investigation into the suspected murder of an unidentified individual whose remains were found buried in a shallow grave in Damaturu.
The corpse, which is significantly decomposed, was uncovered in the Madinatu Alimarami Extension Ward after local authorities received a report on Saturday, March 21, 2026.
According to SP Dungus Abdulkarim, the spokesperson for the command, the identity of the individual has not yet been determined.
Initial examinations of the body showed no evident signs of struggle or external injuries.
However, Abdulkarim noted that foul play is strongly suspected, and an investigation has been launched to uncover the details surrounding the incident and to identify the deceased individual.
He also mentioned that tyre marks believed to be from a vehicle were found at the scene, suggesting that the body may have been moved and discarded there.
"The Yobe State Police Command vehemently condemns this ghastly act of suspected homicide, and we wish to alert the public about the disturbing finding," he stated.
On March 21, 2026, at approximately 2:10 PM, officers from ‘A’ Divisional Police Headquarters in Damaturu discovered the shallow grave at Madinatu Alimarami Extension Ward.
Earlier that day, around 9:00 AM, a report was filed about a lifeless body entombed in a shallow grave, with the legs exposed and the body already in an advanced stage of decay.
The police, together with medical personnel from the General Hospital in Damaturu, visited the scene for further investigation.
Preliminary inspections of the deceased showed no apparent signs of injury or struggle.
Tyre marks resembling those of a vehicle were observed at the site, indicating the possibility that the body had been transported and left there.
The remains have since been handed over to the community for appropriate burial.
Despite the lack of visible injuries, authorities strongly suspect foul play, and an in-depth inquiry has commenced to ascertain the details of the case and to identify the deceased, as well as locate and apprehend those responsible.
The Command urges anyone with information about missing persons in Damaturu and surrounding areas to contact ‘A’ Division or the nearest police station for potential identification.
Furthermore, the public is encouraged to provide any credible information that could assist in the ongoing investigation and lead to the capture of those involved.
"The Command is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents and assures the public that every effort will be made to bring the culprits to justice."
