Numerous women fell victim to sexual assault by men who attacked them during an event described by many as a 'rape festival' in Ozoro, Delta State, on Thursday, March 19.
Reports indicate that the community organizes this festival each March, during which women are prohibited from appearing in public. Any woman who steps outside risks being targeted and assaulted by the men participating in the festival. Footage circulated on social media showed groups of young men chasing after women on the street, tearing their clothing and assaulting them. Some women were observed pleading for help amid their ordeals, and allegations suggest that several were raped by the aggressive men.
The spokesperson for the state police command, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the occurrence and stated that police have begun detaining some of the men involved. He also mentioned that the command would soon issue a formal statement regarding the incident.
In the meantime, there has been widespread condemnation of the event from Nigerians on social media, with various reactions being shared publicly.
