Security operatives in Jos have apprehended 12 individuals suspected of attempting to disrupt the peace in parts of Plateau State. The arrests are part of a broader effort to restore calm following recent tensions.

The Commissioner of Police for the Plateau State Command, Bassey Ewah, reported that the suspects were detained shortly after Friday prayers in the Zololo area, where they allegedly attempted to cause trouble.

"Approximately 30 minutes after prayers, some miscreants around the Zololo area sought to create problems for us, but they encountered us ready. I can confirm that we have apprehended 12 of them. They emerged with sticks intending to move towards the Nasarawa area, but we responded effectively," Ewah stated.

He assured that those arrested would face legal consequences, issuing a stern warning that security agencies would not tolerate any actions aimed at destabilising the state.

"They are here, and I guarantee they will face justice. We are resolute in our commitment to upholding the law," he added.

The police commissioner highlighted that these arrests are a component of the comprehensive security measures implemented after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's visit, which led to an increased deployment of personnel throughout the state.

"I wish to express my gratitude to Mr. President for his visit yesterday. I also commend the Inspector General of Police and all senior officers who were present. This explains the enhanced manpower you observe being deployed to maintain stability," he noted.

Ewah further disclosed that four mobile police units and over 300 additional officers have been assigned to Plateau State, with other security agencies also reinforcing their presence.

He added that security agencies are currently conducting coordinated joint patrols across the state to enable rapid responses to any emergent threats.

"Presently, we have a joint patrol involving all security forces in the Plateau, spearheaded by the police. They are moving from location to location, responding promptly to any calls concerning threats to public order," he explained.

While describing the Jumat prayers as peaceful, the police chief cautioned that there are individuals identified as "merchants of conflict" who are determined to instigate trouble, but he reassured residents of the command's preparedness to counter such threats.

"There are merchants of conflict who wish to see the state embroiled in conflict, but I assure you that as the Commissioner of Police, in collaboration with other security agencies, we are dedicated to ensuring peace is upheld," he asserted.

He also stressed the strict enforcement of the ongoing curfew and other imposed restrictions designed to maintain order.

"We are committed to enforcing the curfew, which is in effect from 3 p.m. You will see our personnel fully enforcing it. The ban on motorcycle taxis is also being enforced, as is the restriction on the movement of tricycles," Ewah stated.

The commissioner acknowledged the ongoing support from the Plateau State Government, expressing confidence that continued cooperation among security agencies will contribute to establishing lasting peace in Jos.

Residents have been urged to adhere to the law and cooperate with security personnel as efforts to stabilise the state continue.
