Officers belonging to the Ebonyi State Police Command are currently in custody after an accidental shooting led to the death of a motorcycle rider in Abakaliki.

The tragic event transpired on January 27, 2026, around 10:30 PM near the Hariz Filling Station along the busy Abakaliki-Enugu highway.

SP Joshua Ukandu, the spokesperson for the command, issued a statement on Thursday confirming that a thorough investigation into the occurrence has been initiated.

Preliminary details suggest that officers from the Command’s Central Police Station in Abakaliki were on a routine patrol near the Spera-in-Deo Flyover when they responded to an emergency call.

During the operation, one officer allegedly fired a shot into the air in a reckless manner.

Unfortunately, the bullet struck a motorcyclist named Nwanchor Uwaezuruike.

He was quickly transported to the hospital for urgent care, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

In light of the incident, the involved officers have since been detained.

The Commissioner of Police for Ebonyi State has instructed the Deputy Commissioner in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a detailed, fair, and professional inquiry to determine the events leading to the shooting.

The Commissioner expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased, assuring them and the public of a commitment to justice in this matter.

The command has reiterated its promise of transparency, accountability, and professionalism, pledging to keep the public updated as the investigation progresses.
