A local political party's youth wing leader has been apprehended in Tamil Nadu, India, under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act due to the tragic death of a two-and-a-half-year-old girl he allegedly raped.
The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Periyanayagam from Sesurajapuram, was arrested on Friday by Anchetty police.
According to an investigation officer, Periyanayagam was involved in a relationship with a 24-year-old woman who was living with her parents after separating from her husband.
The young woman had a daughter who was about two and a half years old from her previous marriage.
On December 11, 2025, she brought the toddler to a private hospital in Anchetty, claiming the child was experiencing seizures. Unfortunately, doctors confirmed the child was brought in dead, according to the officer.
Following a complaint from the child's father, the Anchetty police launched an investigation into the suspicious circumstances surrounding the child's death.
“A postmortem was conducted, and the autopsy report indicated significant internal injuries, leading us to classify the case as a criminal offense,” the officer revealed.
Investigations have disclosed that the girl’s mother was in a relationship with Periyanayagam, who allegedly assaulted the child while the mother was not present.
“The child succumbed to the injuries resulting from the assault,” the officer added.
Currently, Periyanayagam is being held at the Dharmapuri sub-jail under judicial custody and was presented before a court in Krishnagiri.
