Nigerian musician Habeeb Okikiola Badmus, alias Portable, has ignited significant controversy by warning the Yoruba populace of severe spiritual repercussions if they do not support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the upcoming elections.
In a viral social media
video, the ‘Zazu’ artist cautioned that failing to back Mr. Tinubu’s re- election could invoke divine anger, as he referenced traditional gods in his statements that have since faced widespread condemnation.
"We need peace, we want peace. If you don’t want war in Nigeria, you’d better vote for Tinubu," Portable said.
He added, "Thunder and Ogun will strike any Yoruba man who doesn’t. I have been signed, received APC attire; do not worry, I will soon start distributing rice and vegetable oil."
Portable’s comments were made in the context of early political mobilization as Nigeria heads toward its next electoral season, with various entertainers and influencers increasingly rallying behind political figures and parties, notably the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
This recent statement follows his history of public backing for Mr. Tinubu and the APC, particularly noted during the 2023 general elections. The musician was an active supporter of the previous APC presidential candidate, consistently praising him in viral videos and public performances leading up to the elections.
He lauded Mr. Tinubu, denouncing him as a capable leader who could facilitate economic growth and ensure political stability, especially in the South-west region.
However, Portable's relationship with the ruling party seems to have soured in the aftermath of the elections, where he later accused the party of failing to adequately recognize or compensate him for his campaign efforts.
In August 2024, he expressed disappointment about being excluded from the 'Renewed Hope Concert' that took place on 29 May 2023, marking the inauguration of Mr. Tinubu and Vice-President Kashim Shettima. He argued that some artists who performed at the concert did not support Tinubu's candidacy, while he himself—a visible supporter—was overlooked.
Portable also claimed that an initial payment offer of N10 million for the concert was later cut down to N5 million, which he subsequently rejected. This incident was identified as a factor for his absence at the event.
