President Bola Tinubu has ordered the suspension of the cashless toll payment system introduced by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) at key airports across the country.
FAAN had on March 1, 2026, disallowed cash transactions at its toll gates, mandating the use of prepaid access cards or other electronic payment methods.
The implementation of this policy, however, led to significant disruptions, including stranded passengers and motorists, considerable confusion, and severe traffic congestion.
Travellers expressed their frustration, citing missed flights and difficulties with airport pickups as direct consequences of the new system.
Following these widespread complaints, the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, announced the President's decision to suspend the policy. He informed State House correspondents after a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday that the President was concerned about the hardships faced by Nigerians.
Keyamo stated that President Tinubu has instructed the ministry to reconsider the policy and develop a revised strategy.
He added that individuals who had already purchased access cards would be allowed to continue using them, alongside cash payments, until a new way forward is established by the ministry and relevant agencies.
