President Bola Tinubu has affirmed his administration's commitment to intensifying efforts aimed at combating insecurity nationwide, emphasizing that the safety of citizens remains a paramount concern.
He further revealed that Nigeria is engaging with international allies, specifically the United Kingdom and France, to secure crucial support and advanced military hardware to reinforce ongoing security operations.
These statements were made by the President on Sunday while receiving Vice President Kashim Shettima and a delegation of 23 state governors at his Lagos residence, marking the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.
According to Tinubu, security cooperation and the acquisition of modern security interventions were central themes during his recent visit to the United Kingdom.
"I am making all the efforts to ensure that we collectively share the joy of our victory over tyranny. Insecurity is an enemy of development, progress, and prosperity," the President remarked.
He also highlighted recent detailed discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron regarding collaboration on security equipment and assistance.
"One of the major discussions in the United Kingdom was on equipment and support. I can report to you that I had a lengthy discussion with President Emmanuel Macron. They are collaborating with us, and I am also making efforts to contact other nations," Tinubu shared.
The President and the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, had previously returned on Friday from a three-day official visit to the United Kingdom. During their trip, they were hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla, and President Tinubu also held discussions with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Addressing the gathering, Tinubu underscored the importance of prioritizing the welfare of vulnerable populations, warning that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East could exacerbate inflation and diminish purchasing power.
"We should care more for the vulnerable. The Middle East crisis will spike inflation and affect purchasing power. We must be ready to support our people," he stated.
He urged the state governors to remain dedicated to implementing policies and programs that directly benefit the lives of citizens and to support national initiatives against insecurity.
Tinubu also commended Vice President Shettima for his condolence visit to Borno State, promising enhanced protection for its residents through the implementation of advanced security technologies.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, lauded the President's leadership and the effectiveness of his administration's interventions at the state level.
He extended congratulations to Tinubu on the successful state visit to the UK, characterizing it as a significant step in strengthening bilateral ties and attracting investment.
AbdulRazaq also mentioned that discussions concerning state police are progressing, with the Governors’ Forum preparing to submit proposals to the National Assembly to establish the necessary legal framework.
