Special adviser to President Bola Tinubu on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has urged for a comprehensive inquiry into former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. This call follows what Onanuga described as a televised admission by El-Rufai to illegally wire-tapping Nigeria’s National Security Adviser.
In a statement published on the social media platform X, Onanuga asserted, “El-Rufai confesses to wire-tapping Nigeria’s NSA on TV. Does it mean that he and his collaborators have wire-tapping facilities? This should be thoroughly investigated and punishment meted out. El-Rufai is not too big to face the wrath of the law.”
He further insisted on a complete investigation into the illegal surveillance claims made by El-Rufai. These allegations surfaced after an interview with ARISE News on Friday, where the former governor detailed an alleged incident involving National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and a supposed failed attempt to detain him at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Thursday.
El-Rufai alleged that the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) utilized the Department of State Services (DSS) to carry out the operation, claiming Ribadu personally sanctioned the action. The former governor added that he was aware of the plan because his team had intercepted communications, stating, “We listened to their calls.”
Responding to these remarks on Friday via X, formerly known as Twitter, Onanuga characterized El-Rufai's statements as an admission of unlawful surveillance and demanded immediate legal scrutiny.
“El-Rufai confesses to wire-tapping Nigeria’s NSA on TV,” Onanuga posted.
“Does it mean that he and his collaborators have wire-tapping facilities? This should be thoroughly investigated and punishment meted out.
El-Rufai is not too big to face the wrath of the law.”
