A well-known pro-Kremlin figure, Ilya Remeslo, has made headlines after turning against President Vladimir Putin in an uncommon and bold statement.

Remeslo, a 42-year-old attorney recognized for his defense of the Kremlin and his criticism of opposition figures, shared a message with his 90,000 Telegram followers, titled "Five reasons why I stopped supporting Vladimir Putin."

In his post, he labeled Putin as an 'illegitimate' authority and criticized the Ukrainian conflict as a significant failure, attributing high casualties and economic downturns to it. He urged the president to resign.

Speaking from St. Petersburg, he reiterated that Putin 'should resign and face trial as a war criminal,' expressing his belief that Russia's political landscape is 'destined for collapse.'

Ilya Remeslo speaks against Putin's leadership and the war in Ukraine.

He further condemned the nation's leadership, the deteriorating economic conditions, and the limitations on internet access, stating, 'This man has destroyed everything he could touch. The country is literally falling apart.'

Remeslo's statements have shocked many, as it is rare for even pro-war commentators in Russia—often referred to as 'Z-bloggers'—to openly criticize Putin or challenge the foundations of the Ukrainian war.

His comments have also sparked speculation regarding whether his account was hacked or if this was part of a larger political maneuver. Remeslo has dismissed such theories, asserting that his remarks come from his own convictions and are not influenced by any outside authority.

'I am just speaking the truth,' he claimed, adding that many share similar sentiments but are too afraid to voice them publicly.

Previously, Remeslo was part of a Kremlin-affiliated advisory group and had actively campaigned against critics of the government, including the late opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

The implications of his remarks have left both supporters of the government and oppositionists bewildered. Leonid Volkov, a close associate of Navalny, remarked that Remeslo's statements risk going far beyond what is typically permitted, considering that individuals have faced imprisonment for far less.

This development comes amid rising tensions within Russia, characterized by public dissatisfaction with internet restrictions and signs of war fatigue over the prolonged conflict in Ukraine.

Nevertheless, analysts suggest that the Kremlin maintains a strong grip on power, sustained by stringent political oversight and unity among the elite.

Acknowledging the personal risks associated with his statements, Remeslo admitted he could face legal repercussions but emphasized he is prepared for the consequences.

'It is time to break this cycle and speak out,' he concluded, asserting a sense of responsibility after years of endorsing the system.
