During its second weekend, the film generated $108.6 million globally, with $54.5 million from domestic markets and $54.1 million from 86 international regions. This shows a remarkable -5% hold overseas, a strong performance compared to similar sci-fi films like 'Interstellar', 'Dune', and 'The Martian', which had offshores drops of -21%, -48%, and -41% respectively.
Not only has it outperformed all Amazon MGM Studios releases since the merger, eclipsing the $276 million earnings of 'Creed III', but it also stands as the highest-grossing MPA film of 2026 thus far. For reference, the leading film year-to-date remains China's 'Pegasus 3', which amassed $630.4 million.
In detail, 'Project Hail Mary' collected $54.1 million from 86 international markets, showcasing a -5% hold, alongside a domestic revenue of $54.5 million in its second weekend. The cumulative totals now sit at $164.3 million from domestic screenings and $136.5 million internationally.
The -5% hold overseas is significant when compared to rivals such as 'Interstellar' (-21%), 'Dune' (-48%), and 'The Martian' (-41%). Uniquely, this performance occurred during a weekend without holiday traffic.
The film dominated the box office in over 60 markets, including major territories like China, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Brazil, Australia, and Japan. Notable openings this weekend included Spain, where it earned $2.3 million across 648 screens (positioned second to Sony's local comedy 'Torrente Presidente', which made $3.2 million and has a total of $24.5 million in its third weekend), India with $1.8 million from 650 screens, and Malaysia with $825,000 from 180 screens.
IMAX contributed $20.3 million globally to the film's earnings this weekend; IMAX screens (15 in North America, and one in the UK’s BFI) alone earned $4.3 million. Meanwhile, Disney/Pixar's 'Hoppers' is closely trailing 'Project Hail Mary' with a global total of $297.6 million after a weekend revenue of $37 million ($12.2 million domestically and $24.8 million internationally). Domestically, it has earned $138.6 million and $159 million from international markets.
'Hoppers' saw a -33% drop in foreign earnings, and it continues to perform strongly as either the top or second highest-grossing non-local title in markets such as France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK, Japan, China, Korea, Brazil, and Mexico. In Australia, it debuted as the second highest earner at $1.3 million ($2 million including previews), marking it as the most successful animated release for Disney/Pixar since 'Zootopia' in 2016.
The film also achieved the rank of top-grossing Hollywood movie in Japan with $9 million, and in various Latin American countries and beyond, establishing dominance across the board.
