Paris Saint-Germain has successfully advanced to the next stage of the Champions League by securing a victory against Liverpool at Anfield. This win cemented their dominance in the tie, following a 2-0 advantage from the first leg in Paris.
Ousmane Dembele was instrumental in the match, scoring the opening goal in the 72nd minute with a powerful shot and adding a second in stoppage time. These goals ultimately ended Liverpool's aspirations for a comeback in the competition.
Despite the energetic atmosphere at Anfield and an improved performance compared to their showing in Paris, Liverpool were unable to breach PSG's defence. While the home side generated pressure, they lacked the decisive finishing required to overcome the aggregate deficit, leading to their elimination from the Champions League for the second consecutive season at the hands of PSG.
In the first half, PSG posed a greater threat, with goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili making crucial saves to deny Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Ousmane Dembele. Dembele had also missed a prime scoring opportunity when through on goal. Liverpool's best moments were thwarted by a vital defensive intervention from Marquinhos.
Manager Arne Slot made notable tactical choices, including starting Alexander Isak for the first time since December and keeping Mohamed Salah on the bench. However, Salah was brought on early in the game due to an injury sustained by Hugo Ekitike.
Liverpool believed they had earned a penalty in the 65th minute when Alexis Mac Allister went down, but the referee, Maurizio Mariani, overturned the initial decision after a review by VAR.
Seven minutes later, PSG effectively secured their progression as Kvaratskhelia assisted Dembele, who calmly scored from distance. Dembele doubled his tally late in the game, converting a pass from Bradley Barcola, much to the disappointment of the Anfield crowd.
This defeat signifies the end of Liverpool's pursuit of silverware this season. Furthermore, the result casts uncertainty over their prospects of securing a place in next season's Champions League.
