A member of the House of Representatives, Akinlayo Kolawole, has voiced his endorsement for direct primaries in the nomination process of political parties. He contends that this approach restores power to the populace and averts the indication of inadequately qualified candidates via consensus agreements.
The lawmaker, who represents the Ekiti North Federal Constituency II, believes that direct primaries are the most legitimate method for candidate selection, as they enable party members to choose their representatives without the influence of elite factions.
"I am not afraid of direct primaries. Ultimately, the people will decide," he remarked in a statement released by his media office.
Kolawole criticized the reliance on consensus in political party systems, noting that such practices tend to favor weaker candidates, effectively diminishing the essence of internal democracy.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) legislator linked his faith in the direct primary process to his record in office, revealing that he has overseen projects valued at over N1 billion within his constituency over the past three years.
