Thousands of residents across Hawaii have been compelled to evacuate their homes following a severe storm that has caused extensive flooding. State officials have warned that this marks the worst flooding the islands have seen in the past 20 years.

Governor Josh Green indicated that the threat of flash floods continues, especially on Oahu and parts of Maui County, as the state remains under a flood watch due to the harsh weather conditions.

"Take this storm very seriously," Green stated in a video message, adding that while no fatalities have yet been reported, there have been several serious injuries.

The current storm is the second significant weather event to strike the islands within the last week, intensifying already precarious conditions. The governor reported that some regions have received between 40 to 50 inches of rain within the past ten days and forecasted more rain will follow.

Flooding in Hawaii due to severe storms

Authorities have cautioned that the saturated ground could lead to flash floods from even minor rains, resulting in road closures and further damages.

In Honolulu, Mayor Rick Blangiardi projected that the disaster’s financial consequences could surpass $1 billion, as emergency crews race to manage the situation.

Over 230 individuals have been rescued thus far, as rising floodwaters inundate neighborhoods, relocating homes and vehicles, and issuing evacuation requests for approximately 5,500 residents north of the capital.

Officials have also expressed concern about a dam on Oahu which faces potential failure, urging citizens to stay alert and obey safety precautions.

Emergency management teams across the islands have released several flash flood warnings, advising locals to seek higher ground and avoid flooded regions, as many roads remain closed.

Flood alerts have been expanded beyond Oahu to encompass Maui, Molokai, and Hawaii Island.

The governor remarked that this storm could yield “serious repercussions for our state,” noting the extensive damage inflicted on airports, schools, hospitals, roadways, and residences.

“This is the most significant flood Hawaii has experienced in 20 years,” Green expressed at a press briefing, encouraging residents to find shelter and strictly adhere to evacuation orders.

Meteorological experts report that the islands are currently experiencing a "Kona Low," a slowly moving low-pressure system conducive to drawing in warm, moisture-rich air, resulting in intense rainfall and flash floods.

Several areas have reported more than 10 inches of rain, coupled with winds reaching speeds of up to 100 mph, exacerbating the storm's effects.
