The community of Taabaa, situated in the Ogoni region of Rivers State, is abuzz with celebration following the successful capture of an African Fish Eagle by a respected local hunter, widely known as Spirit Man.
According to reports circulating on social media, the eagle holds significant cultural importance within Ogoni traditions, representing power, nobility, and distinction. The sighting of such a bird is considered uncommon, and its capture is an exceptionally rare occurrence.
The hunter reportedly brought the magnificent bird to the ancestral palace of Mene Asaa on January 12, 2026, to receive formal acknowledgment and a traditional blessing.
The African Fish Eagle, a species typically found in southern Nigerian states like Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, and Cross River, faces increasing threats. Its population is diminishing due to factors such as habitat destruction, environmental contamination, and human activities, including hunting.
