The Russian flag has reappeared at an international Olympic-related competition, marking its first elevation during podium festivities in a decade.
This event coincided with podium finishes achieved by Russian athletes at the ongoing Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympics.
The decision to permit Russia's involvement came after the International Paralympic Committee granted approval during its General Assembly held last September.
For several years, Russian athletes have faced restrictions on competing under their national flag due to sanctions imposed for doping infractions following the Sochi 2014 games, with additional bans introduced in 2023 due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The last occasion the Russian flag was displayed was at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics. Currently, Russia remains suspended from all other international sports events, including the Olympic Games and competitions governed by FIFA and UEFA.
Nonetheless, Russian athletes have gradually returned to the international sports arena. Aleksei Bugaev and Varvara Voronchikhina each secured bronze medals in their respective men and women’s downhill standing events.
They were celebrated by a small contingent of Russian supporters, who waved a solitary Russian flag in support.
Bugaev noted that he achieved this victory after a lengthy hiatus since the 2014 Sochi games, while Voronchikhina, competing at this level for the first time, expressed her joy at being able to compete under the Russian flag.
“We have been without a flag for a very long time, and I’m truly happy about this for my country and my teammates,” she remarked.
