During a recent courtesy visit from the senior management of the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD), Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed that his government prioritizes the welfare of Lagos retirees.

The governor emphasized that the Lagos State Government holds pensioners in high regard and intends to treat them with dignity, fairness, and equity.

Sanwo-Olu voiced these sentiments at Lagos House Marina, where he received PTAD's Executive Secretary, Tolulope Odunaiya, and her management team.

He praised the reforms led by President Bola Tinubu aimed at improving the welfare of pensioners nationwide.

Additionally, he highlighted that the Lagos State Government has implemented noteworthy reforms to align with contemporary standards for pensioners.

"In Lagos State, we recognize and respect the contributions of our pensioners who devoted significant portions of their lives serving the government," he stated.

The governor pointed out that Lagos remains the only state that has no outstanding pension arrears, having resolved all liabilities over the past three years.

"If your documentation is complete and you retire, you can expect to receive your entitlements within two to three months at most," he affirmed.

He added, "Our respect for those who have served is profound, as we believe it is essential to show appreciation to our pensioners during their golden years."

Governor Sanwo-Olu commended Tolulope Odunaiya and her team for their dedication and perseverance in fulfilling their national responsibilities.

Earlier in the meeting, Odunaiya expressed PTAD's eagerness to foster a robust partnership with the Lagos State Government, acknowledging that a significant number of the nearly 200,000 pensioners under the Defined Benefit Scheme live in Lagos.

"These individuals, who served our nation honorably, seek fairness, dignity, and access to their rightful benefits," she remarked.

Odunaiya lauded the Sanwo-Olu administration for its substantial efforts in the state, referring to Lagos as Nigeria’s economic engine.

She expressed confidence in the leadership of Governor Sanwo-Olu, believing it would pave the way for meaningful advancements.

Highlighting the governor's willingness to engage with PTAD’s management, she noted his dedication to a leadership style that listens to the populace.

Odunaiya indicated that PTAD aims to enhance service delivery to DBS pensioners in Lagos and to introduce significant reforms in the Defined Benefit Pension Scheme.

The first reform focuses on the Pension Harmonisation Policy, which seeks to rectify pension disparities arising from outdated salary structures over time, restoring fairness in the system.

The second reform aims to facilitate access to healthcare via the National Health Insurance Scheme, enabling qualifying DBS pensioners to receive healthcare services locally without financial strain.

These initiatives have received approval from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in August 2025 and are directed at augmenting the overall welfare of pensioners under the scheme.

"These reforms align with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and represent a dedicated effort to enhance social security and dignity for senior citizens within the Defined Benefit Pension Scheme," she concluded.
