As the Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory approach on February 21, Obinna Simon, the Social Democratic Party's (SDP) candidate for the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), has declared his intentions to tackle pressing issues in education, healthcare, and job creation for the youth.

During his campaign, Simon expressed confidence in his ability to defeat the current officeholder and is committed to improving the living conditions of Area Council residents, including the indigenous population.

Regarding his main goals, the SDP candidate has promised to renovate the many underperforming primary schools within the jurisdiction and to enhance the facilities at Primary Healthcare Centres.

This information was provided during an interview with reporters in Abuja on Sunday.

Simon reflected on the state of primary schools in AMAC, stating: "I was moved to tears after visiting various schools in the area, where I observed students learning while sitting on the bare floor. It is hard to believe these institutions operate under the FCT and are part of AMAC."

"This realization is why I vowed on the day I announced my candidacy to declare a state of emergency in education if I am elected," he added.

He further noted, "Schools in AMAC experienced prolonged strikes that lasted over five months and although they returned to class, they are striking again as we speak.

As an educator, ensuring teachers' welfare is crucial because it directly impacts their ability to provide quality education. A comfortable teacher is more effective at teaching students."

On the matter of security, Simon emphasized that as Chairman of AMAC, he would prioritize regular security meetings with local traditional leaders to proactively address criminal activities in the area.
