Obinna Simon, the candidate for chairmanship under the Social Democratic Party (SDP) for the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), has voiced his concerns over the frequent strikes being executed by teachers in the area.
At a press conference held over the weekend, Simon pointed out that teachers, who had just resumed their duties following a five-month strike that carried over from 2025 into 2026, are once again threatening to initiate another industrial action due to inadequate working conditions.
He reiterated the necessity of declaring a state of emergency in the council's education sector to tackle the issues surrounding service conditions and professional development. Simon underlined that attending to the welfare of teachers is essential in order for them to deliver effectively in their roles and contribute to nation-building.
He stated, "A comfortable environment is crucial for effective teaching. From my experience as a former teacher, I can assert that the quality of teaching differs fundamentally depending on whether salaries are paid on time."
Additionally, Simon raised significant concerns about the deteriorating conditions of primary healthcare facilities within AMAC. He stressed the need for a collective effort that includes traditional leaders, local government, and security agencies to enhance security measures in the area.
