During a plenary session on Wednesday, the Senate paid heartfelt tributes to the late Okechukwu Ezea, who represented Enugu North in the Senate until his death on November 18, 2025, at 62.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Ezea, born on August 11, 1963, was affiliated with the Labour Party (LP).
Before the tributes commenced, the late senator's remains were displayed at the foyer of the Senate chamber.
Family members, including his wife and children, attended the session as the Senate temporarily lifted Order 12, allowing additional attendees into the chamber.
Tributes began following a motion put forward by Senate Majority Leader Opeyemi Bamidele (APC-Ekiti), who called for recognition of the senator’s contributions.
Bamidele expressed that Ezea's untimely death was a significant shock to the Senate.
“It silenced a calm but principled voice in this chamber and deprived the nation of a patriot committed to service, equity, and the public good,” he stated.
He went on to describe Ezea as a unique legislator whose void would be challenging to fill, highlighting his principled approach to lawmaking and deep-seated concern for public affairs.
“He brought not only the mandate of his constituency but also a depth of wisdom that enriched our discussions and strengthened our decision-making,” said Bamidele.
The majority leader underscored Ezea’s commitment to national unity and his respect for all members irrespective of partisan divisions.
“His earnest desire to enhance the lives of his constituents and work toward the collective good was evident,” he added.
Expressing admiration for Ezea's professional accomplishments, Bamidele noted that he was a significant figure in both private and public sectors, referring to him as a “think tank.”
“His presence fostered a spirit of collaboration, and he diligently upheld the interests of Enugu North through legislative initiatives,” he added.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio expressed collective sorrow, noting the Senate lost a colleague and friend.
“He was a dedicated servant of the republic, a distinguished high chief, and an intellectual who leaves a legacy of knowledge.”
Echoing similar sentiments, Deputy Senate President Barau Jubrin (APC-Kano) remarked on Ezea's integrity and steadfast dedication to his beliefs.
Several senators expressed their sympathies, with tributes extending over three hours. Enyinnaya Abaribe (APGA-Abia) described Ezea as a role model for his constituents, indicating the organic love they had for him.
Victor Umeh (LP-Anambra) added that the citizens of Enugu North mourn the loss of a great man, emphasizing his impactful legacy.
Umeh referred to Ezea as a significant advocate for human capital development, while Osita Ngwu (PDP-Enugu) characterized him as a courageous individual of positive disposition.
Kelvin Chukwu (APC-Enugu) affirmed Ezea’s reputation as a man of integrity who was dedicated to his principles.
In conclusion, the Senate engaged in both Christian and Muslim prayers for the repose of Ezea’s soul, observing a minute of silence in his memory.
A resolution was passed to send a delegation to condole with Ezea's family and the government of Enugu State. Furthermore, it was decided that a high-ranking delegation would be present at his final burial rites.
The session concluded with senators processing to pay their last respects to the late lawmaker's remains.
