The Senate Committee on Finance has pulled back its previous suggestion for President Bola Tinubu to remove Hussaini Magaji, who serves as the Registrar- General of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), after he issued an apology to the lawmakers.

This development occurred during a budget defense meeting of the committee held in Abuja on Monday, where Magaji appeared and expressed sincere regret for not attending prior invitations.

The committee had earlier registered its dissatisfaction with what it labeled as Magaji's consistent failure to attend meetings or respond to official communications, often sending representatives in lieu of his attendance.

Senator Sani Musa, the committee chairman, explained that the initial motion for recommending Magaji's removal was driven by a perceived trend of his non- compliance with official requests.

However, after the committee's initial resolution, Magaji personally attended the session, which opened the floor for further discussion on this issue.

During his address, Magaji conveyed an unreserved apology, explaining that the earlier lapses were due to a breakdown in communication between his staff and the National Assembly liaison unit.

He noted that he was in Lagos when the invitation letter was delivered but made efforts to cut short his engagements and instructed his staff to inform the committee that he was en route, albeit he arrived later than expected.

To avert such situations in the future, Magaji announced the establishment of a dedicated liaison office tasked with managing all communications related to the National Assembly.

He assured the senators that steps have been taken to ensure that such oversights do not happen again, emphasizing his respect for the committee and accepting full responsibility for the previous lapses.

Following his apology, several senators defended Magaji. The motion to retract the earlier request for his removal was initiated by Senator Isa Jibrin and seconded by Senator Sani Daura, effectively putting the matter to rest.

The Registrar-General of the CAC was later invited to reappear before the committee to address the performance of his agency in relation to the budgets for 2024, 2025, and the proposal for 2026. (NAN)
