A tumultuous session unfolded in the Senate on Tuesday, during an urgent meeting meant to approve the Votes and Proceedings from the February 4th sitting that saw the passage of the Electoral Bill.
The uproar stemmed from the contentious decision by the Red Chamber to omit a requirement for real-time electronic transmission of results from polling units in the ongoing changes to the Electoral Act.
During the session, Senate President Godswill Akpabio presented the details of a proposed amendment to Section 60(3), which prompted Senator Tahir Monguno (APC, Borno) to propose a motion under Order 1b 52(6) urging the Red Chamber to reverse its previous decision.
The atmosphere grew tense as several lawmakers voiced their dissatisfaction with specific wording in the new amendment proposal.
Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe later requested a point of order to allow for an individual vote by each senator, referencing division under Order 70. However, he subsequently withdrew his point of order, which could have posed a risk to the amendment regarding Clause 60(3).
Details on the outcome of this contentious session will follow.
