The Nigerian Senate is in mourning once more with the passing of Senator Barinada Mpigi, who served as the representative for the Rivers South-East Senatorial District.
The confirmation of his death came from Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro, who shared with AIT that Senator Mpigi succumbed to cancer.
Prior to his death, Senator Mpigi held the position of Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works in the 10th Senate.
It is reported that he had been battling illness for several months, which resulted in him being absent from legislative duties leading up to his passing.
Senator Mpigi was closely associated with Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, and he had recently transitioned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He was a two-term senator, having served in both the 9th and 10th Senates.
Senator Mpigi was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2011 before making the leap to the Senate.
May his soul find eternal peace, Amen.
