Seven Arrested for Trafficking After Army Intercepts Sale of Newborn for N3m in Calabar

In a joint operation, seven individuals were detained on suspicion of human trafficking in Calabar, where they were allegedly attempting to sell a day-old baby for N3 million. The operation was coordinated by the Nigerian Army and NAPTIP.

The 13 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, in partnership with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), apprehended seven individuals suspected of human trafficking during a strategic intelligence- driven operation in the Calabar Municipality of Cross River State.

The operation took place on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, following reliable and detailed intelligence concerning a human trafficking syndicate operating in the area.

Major Yemi Sokoya, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations at Headquarters 13 Brigade, announced this in a statement, indicating that the suspects were caught while attempting to negotiate the sale of a day-old baby boy for N3 million.

"In response to the actionable intelligence, troops executed a well- coordinated raid at Glorious Amazing Grace Hospital, situated in the Ikot Ekpo area of Calabar Municipality," the statement said.

"During the operation, the suspects were arrested while ongoing negotiations were underway to sell a day-old baby boy for Three Million Naira (N3,000,000), which is a serious infringement of the law and a significant violation of human rights."

The arrested individuals include Mrs. Glory Emmanuel (54), Mr. Anthony Bassey (35), Miss Uduak John (27), Mrs. Deborah Edet (35), Mrs. Ruth Asoquo (35), Mrs. Frada Donald (35), all residents of Cross River State, alongside Miss Blessing Okon (23) from Akwa Ibom State.

"Following their arrest, the suspects, together with important evidence, were transferred to NAPTIP officials for further investigation and legal proceedings, pursuant to existing laws and protocols. The rescued infant has been entrusted to the appropriate care services."

The Headquarters 13 Brigade reaffirms its dedicated commitment to collaborate with civil authorities and relevant agencies in the fight against human trafficking, child exploitation, and other criminal acts within its jurisdiction.

“Citizens are urged to continue supporting security agencies by offering timely, credible, and actionable intelligence to enhance security and safeguard lives and properties,” the statement concluded.
