A significant rainstorm has hit the Egbeda Egga community located in the Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, leading to the destruction of over 40 homes and displacing many residents.
Residents reported on Thursday that the unexpected rain, which occurred on Tuesday and Wednesday, was accompanied by strong winds that damaged churches, schools, and local businesses.
Dr. Emmanuel Dare Otitolaiye, who serves as the National President of the Egbeda-Egga Development Union (EDU), expressed that the extent of the damage has severely impacted families who are now struggling to find shelter.
He stated, "Many people have lost their homes and are currently staying with friends and relatives.
We are calling on the relevant authorities to provide immediate assistance to those who have lost their homes, businesses, and livelihoods."
Dr. Otitolaiye further emphasized that the community is urgently in need of relief materials, such as food, temporary housing, and medical supplies, to support the victims of this disaster.
Additionally, the Okun Development Association (ODA) has expressed concern regarding the severe hardship faced by the residents of Egbeda-Egga due to the natural disaster. In a statement, Dayo Thomas, the National Publicity Secretary of ODA, remarked, "We recognize the collective efforts required to alleviate the suffering and help rebuild the community. We stand firmly with the families affected, acknowledging their pain and hardships."
Moreover, a representative from the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) indicated that they are aware of the situation. The source, who wished to remain anonymous, stated, "We have knowledge of the incident and are preparing to deploy to the community to evaluate the damage and determine the next steps."
