Sheikh Bashir Ahmad Sani, a well-known Islamic scholar, has expressed his aspirations to run for the Sokoto State governorship position in the forthcoming 2027 general elections.
The announcement was made during his Ramadan Tafsir session for 2026 in Sokoto, where he highlighted that his decision emerged after visiting 65 villages across the state, where many residents voiced serious grievances concerning the lack of basic services.
He emphasized the urgent needs of these communities, citing increasing insecurity and the prevailing hardships facing the populace.
"For 22 years, we have been advocating for peace and imparting the teachings of Islam. We have never insulted anyone or participated in political activities," he remarked.
Sheikh Bashir narrated how his recent visits revealed alarming accounts from the locals, including incidents of kidnapping, sexual violence, and severe poverty attributed to banditry in various rural areas.
He described the situation in several villages as dire, stating, "If you observe the conditions in which these people live, you would concur that even animals receive better treatment. The suffering is intolerable."
Despite being encouraged by peers and fellow clerics to engage in politics, the scholar had refrained from political involvement, attributing his reluctance to the burdens associated with leadership roles.
