Vice President Kashim Shettima has expressed his appreciation to the Gates Foundation for its persistent investments and humanitarian assistance in Nigeria, labeling the foundation as an essential partner in the nation's development.
He also assured the Foundation of his support in their efforts to enhance and expand collaboration with both the Nigerian government and the private sector in vital sectors such as healthcare, agricultural development, nutrition, and digital transformation.
Shettima made these statements during a reception for a delegation from the Foundation, headed by Mr. Hari Menon, the President of its Global Growth and Opportunity (GGO) division, at the State House in Abuja.
He praised members of the Foundation’s Nigerian team for their dedication, describing them as trustworthy partners in the country's progress.
"I take immense pride in their efforts. I reach out to them at unusual hours and they respond promptly. Our gratitude to the Gates Foundation is immense. It is our key ally in reshaping the Nigerian narrative."
"Your continued investments in human capital advancement, nutrition, agriculture, and health systems are invaluable. We are grateful and intend to elevate this partnership, particularly in nutrition," he emphasized.
The Vice President remarked on Nigeria’s vast potential, suggesting that with the right utilization of its resources, the country could outpace significant global economies, referring to Nigeria as a “sleeping giant” in the African landscape.
He highlighted the necessity for enhanced agricultural productivity through the adoption of modern technologies, improved farming practices, and the use of climate-resilient seeds and irrigation methods.
Earlier, Mr. Menon stated that the delegation's visit aimed to deepen the partnership with Nigeria in support of the ongoing reforms under President Bola Tinubu's government.
He noted that Nigeria is experiencing significant changes and offers substantial opportunities for collaboration geared towards long-term economic growth.
Menon highlighted the Foundation's priorities, including reducing preventable maternal and child mortality, combating infectious diseases, and enhancing economic opportunities.
"In all these areas, Nigeria is emerging as a leader, and we are eager to strengthen our partnerships with local organizations, innovators, and leaders," he concluded.
