The Abia State Police have detained Uchechukwu Uchegbu for allegedly killing his father, Emmanuel Uchegbu, due to an ongoing dispute over property rights.
The tragic event unfolded in the Elugwu Nkata community, located in the Umuahia North Local Government Area of the state.
According to a family member, Chinedu Uche, who spoke with Punch on February 5, 2026, tensions flared when Uchechukwu attempted to convert a piece of family land for his personal benefit, which his father opposed firmly.
The disagreement reportedly evolved over the years into a series of violent encounters.
Chinedu revealed, “Suddenly he came into some money and started asserting control over lands intended to be shared among my father and his siblings. He even began construction on one of the lands that had not yet been divided, which angered my father.”
He further explained, “The land he claimed borders my father’s property. When he began encroaching on my father’s land, my father objected. This marked the beginning of their conflict. Over the years, he allegedly assaulted his father on several occasions, damaged property, and threatened to take over his father's home, asserting that his financial situation gave him that right.”
The last alleged attack occurred on January 1, 2026, when Uchechukwu reportedly used a cutlass against his father, inflicting serious injuries.
The elderly Emmanuel was promptly transported to the Federal Medical Centre in Umuahia, where he remained hospitalized until he succumbed on January 31.
Uche revealed that Uchechukwu was initially apprehended following the January 1 incident but was released shortly after. He was later re-arrested after his father’s death.
Maureen Chinaka, the police spokesperson, confirmed the incident, stating that the suspect is currently in custody, and an investigation is underway.
“Yes, we are investigating this case at the State Criminal Investigation Department. The suspect is in our custody as we proceed with the investigation,” she noted.
