According to the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), the malpractice was revealed through an inquiry by the State Security Agency's foreign mission investigations unit, which found instances of fraud and corruption occurring within the immigration and civic services division at the Abuja mission.

Nevertheless, the report suggests that no concrete action was taken until the SIU stepped in. Shounyane is currently facing a disciplinary hearing set for next week as the relevant authorities work to resolve the allegations.
