Spain has officially barred US military aircraft involved in operations against Iran from its airspace, a decision that goes beyond the previous refusal to permit the utilization of military bases for such purposes, as stated by Defence Minister Margarita Robles on Monday.

"We do not permit the use of military bases nor the airspace for operations connected to the war in Iran," Robles informed reporters in Madrid. This announcement was initially reported by the Spanish newspaper El Pais, citing sources from the military.

With this new directive, US military planes must now reroute around Spanish airspace when traveling to targets in the Middle East. However, exceptions will be made for emergency situations, as reported by El Pais.

Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo indicated that this action is part of the Spanish government's overarching policy of non-participation in what it perceives as a unilateral conflict that contravenes international law. He acknowledged that this could potentially damage relations with the United States but emphasized that the decision reflects Spain's legal and ethical stance, rather than an act of diplomatic aggression.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has openly criticized US and Israeli strikes on Iran, labeling them as reckless and illegal. In the past, former President Donald Trump had threatened to sever trade ties with Spain in response to its refusal to grant the US access to its military bases for the Iran conflict.

This airspace closure highlights escalating tensions among NATO allies regarding their involvement in the Middle East, while also demonstrating Spain's commitment to maintaining a neutral position amid the intensifying situation regarding Iran.
