During a recent event, former Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki asserted that the mere continuation of democracy in Nigeria does not necessarily indicate success. He cautioned against the notion that maintaining the current democratic framework is sufficient if it fails to provide real gains for the populace.

Saraki remarked on the resilience yet challenging nature of Nigeria's democratic journey since 1999, referring to the Fourth Republic as one that has been "tested, strained, but not broken."

He elaborated, "True democratic continuity devoid of quality is not a measure of success. We must candidly and courageously reflect on what is functioning well, what is not, and what changes are essential for improvement." He stressed that discussions on platforms such as the Daily Trust Dialogue are crucial for holding institutions accountable and encouraging public discourse.

Saraki urged attendees to put aside partisan differences, especially with another election cycle approaching, and emphasized that the dialogue should not devolve into political campaigning.

"This is not a moment to speak from our political divides. Let's set aside our political garb and engage as patriotic Nigerians, unified in the goal of elevating our nation," he stated.

While acknowledging the accomplishments of over 26 years of continuous civil governance—including peaceful transfers of power, freedom of speech, media diversity, civil society activity, and a judiciary that sometimes curtails excesses—Saraki warned that mere duration of democracy does not signify success.

"The Fourth Republic has been sustained, but mere survival is not enough. Citizens expect democracy to translate into security, governance, economic prospects, and justice. Continuity without quality is hollow," he commented.

He identified the pressing need for attention to systemic issues such as judicial independence, societal values enforcement, effective anti-corruption strategies, and trustworthy elections. Moreover, he highlighted the significance of fostering constructive criticism and warned against labeling critics as enemies of the state.

"The effectiveness of our democracy will ultimately be assessed by the results it yields, not merely by its persistence," he added.

Saraki expressed assurance that the quality of dialogue participants would lead to innovative ideas aimed at revitalizing Nigeria's democracy. He urged stakeholders to concentrate on pragmatic solutions that ensure the Fourth Republic is remembered for both its longevity and its positive impact on the lives of citizens.
