Suicide Bombers Target Military Convoy in Borno

A suicide bomber crashed into a military convoy in the Timbuktu Triangle area of Borno State, leading to the deaths of five soldiers and injuring several others.

Sources within the security forces informed Daily Trust that the assault involved two senior military personnel, namely a major and a lieutenant, who were caught up in the attack.

"The incident resulted in considerable damage to military equipment utilized for both offensive and defensive maneuvers during the ongoing clearance operations," remarked one of the soldiers involved.

According to reports, the attackers employed a vehicle loaded with explosives to strike the military convoy.

The troops were reportedly returning from a successful operation aimed at displacing multiple insurgent camps, where many insurgents were neutralized, at the time the assault took place.

An officer who wished to remain unnamed relayed, "Yes! Each operation may face challenges, but we have managed to combat them. Sadly, we lost five soldiers in this incident. Our commander, Manga, is in good health, and we will continue our operations. Thank you for your concern."

He elaborated that both armoured and logistical vehicles were destroyed when the explosives-laden vehicle impacted the convoy on Tuesday.

Further insights indicate that the remains of the deceased have been transported to Maiduguri, while the injured personnel have been taken for medical treatment.

The Timbuktu Triangle is known as the site where insurgents previously ambushed Brigadier General Musa Uba, capturing and executing him.

In related news, on Monday, the Joint Task Force North East, under Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), announced the dismantling of several terrorist hideouts and thwarting of drone threats in the region.

A statement from Lt-Col Sani Uba, a spokesperson for the operation, revealed that during the ongoing Operation DESERT SANITY, a cache of arms and equipment was recovered from the insurgents.

The operations commenced on January 18, 2026, wherein troops advanced from their base and undertook planned, intelligence-led actions across multiple identified terrorist bases including Chilaria, Garin Faruk, and Abirma.

The air support provided by the OPHK's Air Component facilitated continuous Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) operations over the area, allowing for accurate tracking of enemy movements, preventing adversary reinforcements, and boosting ground operation precision and confidence.

Throughout the operation, troops have seized various military materials, including radios, phones, AK-47 magazines, substantial quantities of ammunition, Boko Haram/ISWAP flags, and logistical supplies, which further crippled the insurgents' operational and logistical capabilities.

At approximately noon, the advancing troops encountered armed drone attacks initiated by the insurgents. Despite these challenges, the soldiers maintained their focus and continued their offensive. A second attempted assault later in the day was also successfully repelled, reinforcing the troops' control over the area.

Despite ongoing engagements, troop morale remains high, and their combat efficacy is sustained. The overall security context in the area is currently described as calm yet uncertain, with troops exercising caution and readiness for future contingencies.

"The Military High Command has reiterated that operations will persist as our forces remain steadfast in their commitment to eliminate terrorist threats, safeguard civilians, and establish enduring peace and stability in the North East," Uba stated.
