The acting chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Taraba State, Comrade Obidah Bitrus, has asserted that the party in the state remains united, even as the national party experiences internal strife.

Speaking to reporters in Jalingo on Sunday, Bitrus acknowledged that while differences exist nationally, they have yet to manifest as divisions within the Taraba PDP.

His remarks come in the wake of a Congress held by a faction led by Wike, which took place in Jalingo on Saturday, resulting in the election of Alhaji Ibrahim Sale Abba as the new state chairman and the formation of a new executive council.

Bitrus explained that the unrest at the national level stems from disputes regarding the party’s convention held in November of the previous year, the results of which were subsequently contested in court by a disgruntled faction.

The situation escalated when the Court of Appeal invalidated the leadership election that arose from this convention.

Further efforts are underway to address these issues, as the PDP's Board of Trustees has convened several meetings aimed at seeking a resolution. To facilitate reconciliation among the conflicting factions, a committee has been established to conduct discussions and potentially reach an out-of-court agreement.

"It appears likely that a reconciliatory caretaker committee may be formed, tasked to serve for approximately 21 days prior to a mini national convention that will legitimize the new party leadership," he remarked.

Additionally, Bitrus dismissed fears that the departure of certain PDP leaders from Taraba to the All Progressives Congress (APC) would undermine the party's strength in the state.

He noted that some of these politicians are already exploring avenues to return to the PDP, having realized that the APC is significantly oversaturated.
