Two students from Lagos State Model Junior College, Igbonla, Epe, along with their teacher, narrowly avoided tragedy when their vehicle collided with another car in the Onipanu area of Lagos State.
According to Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the collision took place around 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18, 2026.
Oke-Osanyintolu explained that the accident happened as both vehicles were speeding along the expressway, leading to a severe crash.
The force of the impact caused one vehicle to veer into oncoming traffic, resulting in considerable damage to both cars involved.
He noted, “The Honda Accord had only one occupant, while the Suzuki Alto, which carried a teacher and the two students, thankfully resulted in no fatalities, and everyone emerged from the wreck without serious harm.”
“However, two students, identified as Animashaun Ridwan and Ogunbamowo Michael, both in Junior Secondary School 2, reported experiencing discomfort in their heads and eyes. They received immediate medical attention from LASEMA's paramedics, who stabilized them and provided first aid before their parents took them home,” he added.
Mr. Joseph, the Basic Technology teacher involved in the accident, was confirmed as being with the students during the incident.
The victims were safely removed from the scene, and the heavily damaged Suzuki Alto was towed away by LASEMA's Light Tow Truck to prevent further accidents. The authorities have handed over both vehicles to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation.
Oke-Osanyintolu urged drivers in the state to exercise extreme vigilance while on the expressway.
LASEMA also appealed to all road users to take extra precautions, observe speed limits, and comply with traffic laws. Reckless driving and excessive speed pose significant dangers and can result in severe accidents.
“The Agency emphasizes the importance of prioritizing safety to prevent future occurrences and ensure the well-being of all road users in Lagos,” he concluded.
