Authorities in Kwara State have apprehended a 15-year-old male, Gobri Yusuf, who is accused of killing his guardian, Mrs. Akanbi, in Ilorin.
The deceased, reportedly the elder sister of the suspect’s late mother, was attacked in her home.
According to police reports, the minor, who resided with the victim, allegedly assaulted her using various household items such as a frying pan, kitchen knives, a spatula, and a weighing scale.
In a statement released in Ilorin, the Commissioner of Police for Kwara State, Adekimi Ojo, described the incident as both tragic and concerning, revealing that he had personally interrogated the juvenile during the investigation.
Initial findings suggested that the boy had previously attempted to poison Mrs. Akanbi on two occasions by adding insecticide, known as “sniper,” to her soup and watermelon, but those attempts were unsuccessful.
Ojo noted, "The suspect had previously tried to poison the deceased on two occasions by placing insecticide in her food, but those attempts did not succeed."
He further disclosed that the suspect initially attempted to implicate another person, but later admitted to committing the act alone.
Prior to the attack, the deceased had sent Yusuf on an errand to buy fuel and other necessities. Upon his return, the suspect poured the petrol into the generator and activated it while the victim was bathing, likely intending to create sufficient noise to mask the attack.
Reports indicate that he concealed himself behind a door and assaulted the woman with the household utensils.
At that point, she reportedly exclaimed in Yoruba, "Iwo ko lo ye ki o pa mi o," which translates to "You are not the one who should have killed me," according to Ojo.
After the assault, the suspect allegedly changed his clothes and exited the house under the guise of running an errand. He subsequently reached out to the victim's husband, who returned home to find her in a pool of blood.
During questioning, the suspect stated that he acted out of resentment, claiming that the woman frequently reprimanded him for his actions.
The police were alerted to the occurrence on January 14 at approximately 8:30 p.m., prompting an investigation to initiate.
The youth is currently in custody and will face charges in court following the investigation's conclusion.
