Operatives from the Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have detained three individuals under suspicion of illegal gold mining activities in Borno State.
The suspects were caught in Mallam Jakwa Town within the Hawul Local Government Area of Borno State, following actionable intelligence regarding their illicit operations.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Umar Muhammad, Modu Bamai Umar, and Sani Samaila.
Their potential mining operations are believed to be exacerbating insecurity and causing environmental damage in the region.
During their arrest, the authorities recovered a small device used for measuring gold and some mined gold.
The suspects are expected to be prosecuted once the current investigations are finalized.
