President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged both Christians and Muslims in Nigeria to come together and pray for the nation’s peace, cohesion, stability, and security.
In a message addressed to the followers of both faiths during the overlapping seasons of Lent and Ramadan, he implored them to act honorably in their responsibilities towards God and fellow beings.
The message, which he personally signed, highlighted that the simultaneous occurrence of Lent and Ramadan serves as a reminder that as people of faith, “we have much in common and are united under one God.”
He stated, “As we observe these significant periods, I encourage us all to uphold the spirit of good neighborliness, foster peace, unity, and stability, while praying for the progress and security of our nation.”
Additionally, he urged, “Let us adhere to the virtuous teachings of our respective religions and fulfill our duties to God and our communities, praying that the insights and joys of these sacred periods remain with us always.”
Wishing well to Christians and Muslims on these solemn occasions, he noted, “This year marks an exceptional occurrence where Lent and Ramadan begin concurrently. This unique event draws attention to our shared beliefs as a unified faith community.”
He explained that for Christians, the Lenten season is a period of fasting, self-denial, and introspection, reflecting the example of Jesus Christ’s trials before His crucifixion, which provided salvation for mankind.
For Muslims, Ramadan represents a sacred time devoted to complete obedience to God, marked by sacrifice, devotion, love, and service to others, representing one of the fundamental pillars of Islam.
Beyond mere fasting, Ramadan encourages profound spiritual reflection and adherence to Islamic principles.
