Tinubu’s Economic Reforms Are Restoring Trust and Boosting Nigeria’s Growth, Says Idris

Mohammed Idris, Nigeria's Minister of Information and National Orientation, has stated that the economic reforms introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu have successfully stabilized the nation’s economy, restored confidence among investors, and set Nigeria on a trajectory for sustainable growth after a prolonged period of fiscal instability.

During an interview on the ICAN On Air program, the minister characterized significant steps like the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of foreign exchange as decisive actions aimed at rectifying structural economic inadequacies, thereby averting potential national insolvency.

Idris underscored the importance of trust and transparency in governance, committing to maintain open channels of communication and responsiveness to public input.

He expressed that President Tinubu is open to revising policies while remaining dedicated to essential reforms.

The minister recalled that as of May 2023, numerous states were struggling to pay salaries, with most revenue being directed towards servicing debt.

While acknowledging that the reforms have resulted in short-term economic challenges, he emphasized the positive outcomes already being seen, including a rise in foreign reserves to approximately $46 billion—the highest figure in eight years—alongside declining inflation rates and renewed trust from investors and international entities.

"Trust is critical; without it, confidence cannot be built, and meaningful development is unattainable. It is our responsibility to communicate government policies transparently and listen to the constructive input from Nigerians," Idris stated.

Additionally, he noted Nigeria's removal from the FATF grey list, viewing it as an enhancement to the country’s financial credibility.

Regarding tax reforms, Idris clarified that their purpose is to simplify and broaden the tax base without increasing the burden, thereby ensuring equity and improved developmental planning.

Discussing the issue of misinformation, he mentioned that the government is intensifying inter-agency cooperation and promoting media literacy to combat the spread of fake news, all while upholding the tenets of freedom of expression.

"Misinformation can be perilous. If not addressed effectively, it could undermine the very foundation of our nation. While media freedom is vital, it must come with accountability," Idris cautioned.

In conclusion, he appealed for patience and active participation from Nigerians, assuring them that sustained engagement with these reforms will eventually reflect in critical areas such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, and overall state-level development.
