Police in Tell City, Indiana, reported the tragic discovery of a two-year-old boy, Erik Reichard, found dead in his residence. The child's body was reportedly covered in sores and insect bites, and he weighed a mere 15 pounds, significantly below the average for his age.
Authorities were alerted by the parents, Trevor Reichard-Hayes, 39, and Katherine Carter, 31, who claimed they had not seen their son alive for approximately 14 hours before reporting him unresponsive. Emergency services arrived at the scene, and despite their efforts to perform CPR, the child was pronounced dead on April 3.
The parents have since been taken into custody and face charges including murder, neglect of a dependent resulting in death, neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury, and neglect of a dependent. Two other children were also removed from the household.
A police spokesperson described the scene as incredibly difficult for all involved and requested prayers and support for investigators and the victim's family, stating that the investigation is ongoing.
According to reports, the child appeared extremely thin and malnourished. His mother allegedly told arresting officers that the boy had been eating his diapers, which authorities suspect was a result of extreme hunger.
Investigators executing a search warrant reportedly found the home in a deplorable state, with feces on the floor, scattered diapers, and accumulated waste. One child's room contained a small bed, diaper remnants, and drywall debris. A training toilet was also found filled with feces and urine, appearing uncleaned for an extended period.
An autopsy revealed that the child had ingested materials consistent with drywall, paint chips, spackling from the home, and diaper material.
Records indicate Carter identifies as a "digital content creator" on Facebook, while Reichard-Hayes has a background in the United States Army, serving in roles such as infantryman and armorer, and participated in combat in Afghanistan.
