Trader Fatally Stabbed by Wheelbarrow Pusher in Rivers State

A violent incident occurred at the Fruit Market in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where a wheelbarrow pusher named Zakara Afaaruwu allegedly fatally stabbed trader Higightor Wenem during an argument over space. The altercation has heightened tensions between the local Hausa community and other traders.

Tensions flared at the Fruit Market located in the Oil Mill area of Rumuokwurusi, Port Harcourt, on Friday when a wheelbarrow operator, identified as Zakara Afaaruwu, allegedly stabbed a trader named Higightor Wenem to death.

Witnesses at the market reported that Afaaruwu had blocked part of the market, which prompted complaints from traders who needed more space for their goods.

In a bid to create additional room, traders requested Afaaruwu to move his wheelbarrow, leading to a dispute between him and Wenem.

Following the confrontation, the victim was rushed to a Military Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed his death upon arrival.

The altercation caused unrest among the Hausa community present in the market and other traders involved.

CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, the Public Relations Officer for the Rivers State Police, issued a statement on Saturday validating the incident. She confirmed that the suspect was arrested and is currently in police custody as the investigation proceeds.

She noted that Wenem’s body has been transferred to the morgue for an autopsy.

In the statement, she stated:

"The Rivers State Police Command has addressed a homicide that occurred today, Saturday, 14th February, 2026, at approximately 7:00 a.m. at the Fruit Market, Oil Mill, Rumuokwurusi, Port Harcourt.

"Initial investigations indicated that a trader requested wheelbarrow pusher Zakara Afaaruwu to clear the area obstructed by his wheelbarrow to make more space for goods. Afaaruwu refused the request, resulting in an argument.

"During the dispute, the wheelbarrow pusher allegedly stabbed the trader, Higightor Wenem, aged 30, who hails from Mbagel Village in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State, with a dagger.

"Emergency services attempted to offer medical assistance, but the victim was pronounced dead by hospital staff. His remains have been delivered to the morgue for further examination.

"The situation escalated, causing disturbance between the Hausa and Benue communities present. Fortunately, swift police action managed to restore order and avert further chaos.

"The suspect was secured and is presently in custody as investigations move forward.

"The law enforcement agencies have brought the situation under control and continue to monitor the surroundings. Further updates will be provided.

"The Command reassures the public of its dedication to ensuring peace and security in the state, encouraging residents to maintain calm and abide by the law."
