A devastating incident in Kentucky has resulted in the death of a woman who was allegedly picked up and crushed by a garbage truck's mechanical claw. The family of 35-year-old Tyrah Adams, who was experiencing homelessness, plans to pursue legal action against the city following the county coroner's confirmation of her cause of death as severe blunt force and compressional trauma.

Louisville police had initially stated that Adams came into contact with a garbage truck during a routine cleanup operation in an alley. However, details indicate that on February 12, 2026, truck operators using a hydraulic claw to clear debris inadvertently picked Adams up. Reports suggest the operators did not see her and subsequently released her from the claw.

Adams' family believes she managed to reach a nearby convenience store, where an employee and a customer alerted emergency services by calling 911. She was transported to a hospital but succumbed to her injuries.

"She didn't walk into this truck. They physically picked her up with that claw, squeezed her, compressed her, and dropped her. And left her there to find her own help," stated Stephanie Rivas, the family's attorney, to Fox19.

The Jefferson County Coroner's Office officially ruled Adams' death as accidental, attributing it to blunt force trauma and compressional trauma sustained from the garbage truck incident, as reported by the Courier-Journal.

A spokesperson for the Public Works department confirmed that the two sanitation workers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave, according to Wave3.

However, Adams' family is seeking further clarification regarding the circumstances that led to her not being seen by the truck operators. A police report obtained by Wave3 details that the crane operator initially picked up a pile of trash and then exited the truck to inspect it. After returning to the driver's seat, the operator proceeded to move the truck forward.

"Knowing that they did not help her at all – that's where most of my anger comes from," Sandra Akers, Adams' sister, expressed to Fox19. Akers added, "Knowing what he had done and what he saw, he didn't even have the decency to just help."

Reports indicate that Adams collapsed in the doorway of the convenience store after seeking help.

Rivas expressed belief that the family has not received complete information regarding the incident. She informed Louisville Public Media that the family had not yet viewed footage from an external camera on the truck or from nearby surveillance systems. Rivas also alleged that her investigators observed that an internal camera on the truck had been "covered up."

"They had to get out of the truck to operate that equipment, but had they done the extra step that they were required to do and inspected the area, they would have found Tyrah," Rivas told Louisville Public Media. "This was completely preventable on their part."
