Reports indicate that numerous individuals may have lost their lives and properties destroyed in a violent confrontation between law enforcement agents and the populace of Katai and Fauda villages located in Wudil Local Government Area, Kano State.
Locals stated that the unrest began from a property conflict between some villagers and a Fulani traditional leader, who allegedly claimed ownership of land that belongs to native Hausa families.
As tensions escalated, it was reported that the villagers refused to cede the contested land.
Community insiders disclosed that the situation deteriorated after a nocturnal raid by armed individuals believed to be security personnel.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that the attackers, dressed in civilian clothing, invaded the villages and discharged firearms, causing panic among residents who initially thought they were bandits.
In reaction, the village inhabitants allegedly armed themselves with local weaponry, leading to a conflict during which one villager was shot.
It was reported that the residents managed to overpower one of the assailants and subsequently killed him, mistakenly identifying him as a bandit.
Authorities later clarified that the deceased was actually a security officer, which further exacerbated the situation.
Sources suggest that in retaliation, security forces conducted a counter- operation, resulting in additional fatalities and the destruction of homes, forcing numerous community members to flee.
Abba Muhammad Tukur, the Chairman of Wudil Local Government Area, confirmed the incident and described it as a tragedy.
In an official statement conveyed by his spokesperson, Abba Darki, he reassured residents that investigations are underway, vowing that justice would prevail without bias.
Efforts to contact the spokesperson for the Kano Police, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, were unsuccessful, while the atmosphere in the affected communities remains tense.
