One individual tragically lost their life following an accident involving a truck transporting soft drinks at the Tipper Garage junction on the Dutse- Bwari highway in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

According to reports from Abuja Metro, the accident took place around 8 p.m. on Tuesday. The trailer, which was traveling from the Usuma Dam area, reportedly experienced brake failure, resulting in a collision with a cooking gas tanker at the junction before the trailer overturned.

Ose Idasho, the Chairman of the Mines Transport and Workers Association in the locality, shared insights with Abuja Metro regarding the accident. He mentioned that the trailer overturned onto a car, leading to the death of one person who was subsequently retrieved from under the vehicles.

Idasho further clarified that the gas tanker was making a U-turn at the junction to access a nearby Shafa filling station when it was struck at the front section. Although the tanker incurred slight damage, it was successfully driven into the filling station afterward. Meanwhile, workers spent significant time overnight unloading crates of beverages from the overturned truck to clear the roadway.

It was reported that officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) took several hours to arrange for a towing vehicle, eventually managing to remove the trailer from the road around midnight.

Abuja Metro also indicated that the Tipper Garage junction has been notorious for numerous accidents resulting in fatalities and property damage. These mishaps are often linked to brake failures in trucks, primarily due to the steep gradients of the area.

Many stakeholders have expressed concerns that these incidents frequently involve drivers who are unfamiliar with the area and its terrain. Recommendations have been made to install significant traffic warning signs several kilometers ahead of the junction from the Bwari direction and ultimately to construct a flyover bridge to improve safety at this hazardous intersection.
