Two individuals have lost their lives following a light aircraft accident in Littleborough, Greater Manchester.

The aircraft is thought to have taken off from Birmingham at approximately 10 am on Tuesday, February 3, before it descended onto farmland near Hollingworth Lake and Blackstone Edge.

According to Greater Manchester Police, the bodies of the two men were recovered at the crash site, where they were pronounced deceased.

No other individuals are believed to have been onboard the aircraft, and there were no reported injuries on the ground.

Chief Superintendent Danny Inglis from the Greater Manchester Police's Rochdale district expressed his condolences, stating, "This is a devastating incident where two people have lost their lives, and our thoughts are with their families and friends."

Inglis also mentioned that authorities have been collaborating closely with emergency services and other partners throughout the day to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident. He affirmed that officers would remain on site overnight and into the following day.

"There will be an increased presence as investigators thoroughly examine the area to ensure all pertinent evidence is collected," he added.

Witnesses reported observing a damaged parachute hanging from a pylon near the crash location, while helicopters were seen above as part of the significant emergency response.

According to a local resident speaking to Metro, "more than 100" emergency service vehicles, including ambulances, police units, and cranes, were dispatched to the scene of the crash.

The eyewitness also described the weather conditions in Littleborough as severe, stating it was “very windy, with sporadic showers, foggy, and overcast.”

As of now, it has not been determined if anyone else sustained serious injuries in the incident.

The Air Accidents Investigations Branch has confirmed it is investigating the crash for more insight into the incident's causes.
